The journey of boxing in Ghana, particularly for female boxers, has been challenging and filled with hurdles. Many promising talents have faced setbacks, whether due to financial constraints or personal struggles. Notable athletes such as Ornella Sathoud and Sarah Apew made commendable efforts to break barriers in the sport but encountered difficulties that hindered their progress.
On November 24 2024 at the Bukom Bicing Arena, Abigail Kwartekaa Quartey stood tall becoming the first Ghanaian female boxer to win a world boxing Championship title.
The young female boxer showcased exceptional skill, determination, and patriotism as she competed against Sangeeta Birdie from the United Kingdom in the World Super Bantamweight division. With an impressive record of 10 fights and 6 knockouts, Abigail proved to be a formidable opponent, demonstrating superior strength and technique that overwhelmed her rival.
After an intense battle, Abigail Kwartekaa Quartey won after all three judges scored 98-91 via unanimous decision in favour of the Ghanaian cementing her 9th victory in her career as a professional boxer.
The 28-year-old is currently ranked number one in the Female Bantamweight division in Ghana and 50th out of 170 female boxers globally. The Ghanaian icon hopes to improve her performance and win more honours for Ghana.
