Ronwen Williams – First African Based Player to be nominated for Yashin Trophy Award

Born on January 21 1992, South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns Player Ronwen Williams had become the first player playing for an African Club to be nominated for the Balon dor’s Yashin Trophy Award.

The 32-year-old born in Port Elizabeth started his football career for the youth team Shatterprufe Rovers in South Africa. He later went through the Tottenham Hotspurs Youth team before being brought back to South Africa’s Super Sports  United.

Ronwen Williams started his senior career in 2010 where he played 278 games for the club before being transferred to Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2022 Season. He has also gone through the ranks of the South African National teams from 2011 to date where he has played from the U20 to the Senior National Team level.

In 2023 Williams was named the best Goalkeeper of the African Cup of Nations after leading the Bafana Bafana to a third-place finish in the tournament. The following year he bagged a Ballon Dor nomination for the Best Goalkeeper in the World where he was ranked 9th in the world.

Williams has played 43 games for the South African National team since 2014 and has since remained Bafana Bafana’s number one Goalkeeper.
