The Breast Society of Ghana has revealed alarming statistics on breast cancer, with over 4,000 women diagnosed daily and a 50% survival rate. Breast cancer remains a leading health challenge globally, accounting for 30% of cancer cases in Ghanaian women.

Ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, survivors shared their experiences, highlighting stigma, financial burdens, and limited access to healthcare facilities, particularly in rural areas. They emphasized the need for policy changes to ensure equitable resource distribution and accessible care.

The society’s president, Dr. Hannah Ayettey Anie, stressed the need for policy changes to achieve equitable services and resources nationwide. The Member of Parliament for Daffiama/Bussie/Issa Constituency, Sebastian Sandaare, pledged to address the lack of essential logistics in northern Ghana.

Health experts debunked prevalent myths surrounding breast cancer, emphasizing early detection and treatment. Dr. Florence Dedey, a consultant surgeon, noted that breast cancer is not a spiritual disease, and Dr. Akwasi Anyanful, a molecular biologist, highlighted the importance of screening for early detection.

The survivors’ stories showcased resilience and hope, demonstrating that breast cancer is not a death sentence. The fight against breast cancer requires a united effort to address the challenges and ensure accessible care for all.
